My beloved friends,
The enemy wants you to feel dumb, stupid, unworthy and will tell you that “you should know better than that” when you sin. Then he will whisper in your ear that “you should be condemned to hell”! How do we know this is all from the enemy? Because if you’re a believer in the gospel of Jesus Christ there is no condemnation for you! You have been forgiven at the cross where Jesus paid the price for EVERY sin with His own blood. He forgave all of your sins, past, present, and future! Your next sin is paid for! And with your new heart, you don’t even want to sin! That’s right, as a new creation in Christ, your new heart of flesh, and the Spirit who lives in, you want to please God and turn from sin! Your new heart’s desire is to please Him who “has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves” (Colossians 1:13).
Look at Romans 8:31 which is deep into the chapter that started with, “So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.” Then after 30 verses, we come to Romans 8:31, “what shall we say about such wonderful things as these?” In other words, we become speechless when we view the cross in its totality and reality. When we view the forgiveness, the love, and the grace of God found in Jesus’ wounds, in His death and resurrection for us!!! See it now as you read the following passage.
Romans 8:31-34 NLT What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us? 32 Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else? 33 Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for his own? No one—for God himself has given us right standing with himself. 34 Who then will condemn us? No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us.
Look at all these questions one by one, friend, and bask in the love and grace of God again! These questions here are critical to our true identity in Jesus, and the accuser who is always doing his best to put into our hearts and minds that we are simply dirty rotten sinners, only deserving of hell and eternal separation from God with His wrath poured out on us. But Paul here is refuting it all!
- What shall we say about such wonderful things as these?
- If God is for us, who can ever be against us?
- Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else?
- Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for his own? NO ONE!!!
- Who then will condemn us? NO ONE!!!
“No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us.”
Do you see your sin laid upon the Lamb of God who takes them all away? Do you see Jesus sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand pleading for you? Thank and praise Him just now for being such an amazing perfect offering! Jump up and down and run through the house leaping and jumping for joy because Jesus went to that cross with joy in His heart when He was thinking of you! Then look at the cross again and see that “God himself has given us right standing with himself.”
Oh yes, I’m running and skipping and leaping for joy, all through the house and down the neighborhood. Who could not be, after reading this wonderful good news? I’m not condemned because Jesus was condemned in my place. No charges can be laid against me, because they were all laid against Jesus and He expunged my record of wrongs. Who can condemn me? No one! NO ONE! The court has been held, the judge has spoken, He has declared me free to go because my charges have been assigned to Another and fully paid, and I’m free now!
Blessed Jesus, you have taken my sin and given me your righteousness. You have taken my shame and given me your glory. In the fable, the beauty kissed the beast, but in the gospel the Beauty BECAME the beast that the beast might become beautiful, without spot or blemish!
Thank you Erick, for this delightful exposition of Romans 8 that has me laughing and running and leaping for joy!
